Prep Guide For 6 Major Home Crises

By: John GalvinPopular Mechanics

According to John Galvin, here are 6 defenses for home crises:
  • Tornadoes: Go to lowest part of your house and have many walls between you and the tornado
  • Floods: Sump pumps are best defense against wet basements and minor flooding
  • Black-out: Generator is the best best defense. Also make sure you have an accessible radio and flashlight
  • House Fires: When you use the fire extinguisher, make sure you are six feet from the flames. Also keep escape route back of you.
  • Earthquakes: Use anchor bolts and earthquake brackets to attach home to its foundation
  • Hurricanes: For hurricane season, plan time to get out of town. You can also add roof straps and storm shutters to your home for protection.

2011:5 Home Resolutions

By: Money Crashers, USNews.com
According to Money Crashers, here are 5 Home Resolutions:
  • Resolution #1: Make your home more eco-friendly with just a few clicks. Go to Catalogchoice.org and stop getting unwanted and solicited catalogs
  • Resolution #2: Three ways to green your yard (1) Invest in rain barrels to water grass and garden in the summer (2) Use a push mower to prevent emission of pollution (3) Use organic fertilizer instead of chemical-based fertilizer
  • Resolution #3: Lower your refrigerator's  temperature. If you have an old refrigerator, replace it with an Energy Star Model. You can save energy, keep your food from spoiling, and  save money in energy bill.
  • Resolution #4: Ditch your A/C for the summer or invest in an energy efficient model.
  • Resolution #5: Stop using paper towels. Save the environment and use rags or cloth towels. If you do use paper towels, invest in recycled paper.

4 Tips to Keep Historic Home Safe From Winter Damage
By: Sally Zimmerman, The Daily Green

According to Sally Zimmerman, here are 4 tips for your historic home:
  • Tip #1: De-icing walkways and Driveways. For pathways, you can use sand or sawdust for traction. You can also shovel early to prevent show from accumulating.
  • Tip #2: Preventing Ice Dams: Inspect your roof for ice dams during the first light snowfall or heavy frost. Too keep ice dams from forming, make sure attic floor is insulated and that the gaps to heated areas are sealed off.
  • Tip #3: Removing snow and ice from roof. Install de-icing tape or cables along the bottom of the gutter. Don't use chemical-based de-icers because it will discolor shingles and corrode drains.
  • Tip #4: Keep melting snow out, add an impervious roofing underlayment. This will reduce the damage from heavy accumulations.
